1951 NFL Quarterfinal-Detroit Lions-14, San Francisco 49ers-0

Bobby Layne, Lions QB
December 23, 1951

Weather-33 degrees, 13 mph W

Detroit's defense went unheralded during the 1951 season, but they showed up on Sunday and shutout the 49ers, 14-0. The Lions defense held San Francisco to 192 yards, and the 49ers never crossed the Detroit 30-yard line. All-Pro DL Les Bingaman led the Lions with 6 solo tackles and 2 sacks of Frankie Albert. Bobby Layne was able to move the ball on the Niners defense all day long, expertly mixing the run and pass to keep San Francisco off the field. Layne completed 14 of 20 for 186 yards, including a 13-yard score to Leon Hart to put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter.

The Lions must await the outcome of the late game to see whether they will be headed to New York or Cleveland for the semifinals.
