1946 NFL Quarterfinal-New York Giants-9, San Francisco 49ers-7

December 21, 1946

Weather-25 degrees, 32 mph WNW, light snow

The Giants and 49ers battled the elements for 60 minutes in a tightly played defensive battle that came down to the last play. The 49ers took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field for a touchdown, with Alyn Beals catching his 11th TD of the season. San Francisco would win the yardage battle 314-235, but they would not score for the remainder of the game.

The Giants struggled during the first half, gaining only 52 yards and suffering through a pair of Frank Filchock interceptions. Filchock would hit Jim Poole for a 77-yard TD to give the Giants a 9-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. San Francisco would have a final chance at victory when they took over from their own 17 with 1:51 to play. But, after driving the ball 83 yards to the Giants 10-yard line, kicker Joe Vetrano had to battle tremendous winds to try to win the game. Vetrano missed a 17-yard field goal wide to the left as time expired, and the 49ers were eliminated.
